What is Senokot?

Senokot is a stimulant laxative, which means it stimulates the muscles of the bowel wall to produce a bowel movement. It is made from the senna species of plants. There are slightly different versions of Senokot in the USA and the UK.

USA versions: the standard Senokot product just contains senna, and a double-strength SenokotXTRA version is also available. The Senokot-S product contains both senna and the stool softener docusate sodium.

UK versions: again, the standard Senokot just contains senna. A double-strength version is called Senokot Max. A fruit-flavored syrup version contains senna as a liquid, and Senokot Dual Relief contains both senna and fennel, to relieve bloating.

What symptoms does it treat?

The standard Senokot products are designed to treat constipation. Senokot-S (USA) can treat constipation that is associated with hard and dry stools, and Senokot Dual Relief (UK) can treat constipation and bloating.

How is it taken?

Senokot comes in tablet form in the USA and tablet or liquid form in the UK.

I tried Senokot before bed for my extreme IBS-C and the next day I had such horrible cramps and only a little stool came out. After all that torture I was still severely constipated.
