motilium

What is Motilium?

Motilium (domperidone) is a dopamine antagonist which blocks dopamine receptors within the upper part of the gastrointestinal system. Domperidone blockings the dopamine receptors found in the upper end of the digestive system, which then tighten the muscles at the entrance to the stomach and relaxes the muscles at the stomach exit. It also causes contractions within the muscles of the stomach itself.

All of these things combined meant that food passed through the stomach faster. This can help to prevent vomiting and nausea and other problems related to the stomach.

What symptoms can it treat?

Motilium can be used to treat nausea and vomiting, as well as uncomfortable stomach bloating and a feeling of fullness in the stomach. It can also be used to treat reflux.

How is Motilium taken?

Motilium comes in tablet form.

REVIEWS OF MOTILIUM

Review by Piers

I was diagnosed with IBS-C at age 15. I have been taking mebeverine 200mg and rantidine 150mg twice a day since then but they only helped a little bit. Last year I was diagnosed with stomach ulcers and my GP prescribed Motilium 10mg. I was told that the ulcers with my IBS and a partial motility disorder made food sit in the stomach too long which can cause constipation. I thought I would give the Motilium a go as the doctor said that not only would it push the food through the stomach more quickly but it could also help with the IBS.

As soon as I started taking these I found that the nausea (Motilium is also used as an anti-emetic) from my IBS, the chronic bloating, some of the pain and other symptoms went away or died down a lot. I have also reintroduced curry back into my diet and a few other products.

The pills are small and easy to swallow and the only main side effects are milk production in both men and women and breast growth in men. I am happy to say I haven't started lactating and my breasts don't seem to be getting any bigger (after using for four months).
