counseling
What is counseling?
Counseling is used to explore mental and emotional difficulties and work through issues such as abuse, mental health difficulties and depression, as well as more day-to-day problems such as frustrations or anger. Counselors are trained to be non-judgmental in their attitude to patients, whatever they are talking about. They can help patients see their problems from a new angle through careful listening, and can help patients make choices or see their lives more clearly. Counselors do not give advice or tell patients what to do.
What symptoms can it treat?
Counseling is not designed to directly treat symptoms of irritable bowel syndrome, but it can help to work through emotional issues which are contributing to your symptoms. In particular, if your symptoms are closely linked to your stress levels and general mental health you may see an improvement in your symptoms.
What happens in a counseling session?
The counselor will ask you questions about what is troubling you and you will be able to talk about any problems you have. You will be able to explore your feelings without worrying about what the counselor thinks of you - or that they are not really listening!
